Tarpon Fishing

100_1076.jpgMegalops Atlanticus, the silver king known to many as the ultimate inshore gamefish … 6 feet of chrome clearing their complete body length from the water, while twisting and turning in mid-air. Blistering runs turn lesser tackle into piles of junk, bowing to the king to keep from parting the line, as well as the jumps and runs are what tarpon fishing is all about.TARPON can be fished in many different ways and areas, which involves different types of boats and tactics. Small tarpon can be fished at the jetties on certain tides, with larger fish targeted in the open bay and offshore out to several miles. Some of the largest concentrations are found offshore of the Gulf beach, normally requiring a larger boat to fish for them due to weather conditions. This style of fishing involves trolling lures, drifting natural bait, or sight-casting lures in and around roving schools. When fishing live bait, incidental catches of sharks, jack crevalle, bull reds and king mackerel are common. For the fly fisherman, the best opportunity would be fishing from the Beavertail due to increased maneuverability and the open casting deck. Tarpon can be fished in the bay and close offshore when the weather permits.
